That's the world Generative Engine Optimization — GEO — exists to fix.

The one-paragraph definition

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of getting your brand named, cited, and recommended inside answers from generative AI engines: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, and Claude. It overlaps with traditional SEO but the goal is fundamentally different. SEO wins when you rank in the top 10 blue links. GEO wins when you're named inside the answer.

You'll also see GEO called AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) or LLM SEO. The terms are used interchangeably.

Why GEO suddenly matters in 2026

Three things changed at the same time:

  • Google AI Overviews now ship on more than half of US searches, taking the top of the SERP.
  • ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini have crossed the threshold where buyers consult them in workflows they used to give to Google — vendor research, product comparisons, "should I buy X" questions.
  • Click-through rates on traditional results have dropped sharply for queries where an AI answer is shown, because the answer often makes the click unnecessary.

The combined effect is that "ranking in Google" is now a smaller share of "being discovered." If your brand is invisible in AI answers, you have a structural marketing problem — even if your SEO scorecard looks great.

A site can have perfect technical SEO and still be invisible in AI answers if the brand isn't mentioned across the third-party sources the engines pull from. That's the thing most SEO teams don't yet appreciate.

The four metrics that actually measure GEO

Forget anything you've read about "AI keyword density" or "prompt optimization." Those aren't real signals. GEO performance is measured on four objective metrics:

1. Visibility Rate

Of the buyer-intent questions someone might ask AI assistants in your category, what percentage produce answers that mention your brand at all? A brand that's named in 12 of 30 queries scores 40%. Below 20% is effectively invisible. Above 60% is category-leading.

2. Position Score

Being mentioned isn't the same as being recommended. Position Score weights the quality of each mention — primary recommendation (1.0), listed favorably in a top-3 set (0.7), mentioned among many alternatives (0.4), mentioned only as an alternative to a competitor (0.3), mentioned negatively (0.0). The average across all queries where you appeared.

3. Citation Share

Across all queries, what fraction of the URLs the engines cite point to your domain or to third-party sources where you're named favorably? This score surprises buyers most — they assume their own site is what gets cited, and almost always it's not. The gap between "we publish a lot" and "AI engines cite us" is what sells the GEO engagement.

4. Share of Voice

Brand mentions / (brand mentions + all competitor mentions) across the full query set. If you're named 8 times and your three competitors are collectively named 32 times, your share of voice is 20%.

Together these four are the entire GEO scorecard. A composite "AI Visibility Index" can blend them into a single 0–100 number for executive reports.

Why traditional SEO tools miss all of this

Ahrefs, SEMrush, Search Console, and Screaming Frog were built to measure links, rankings, and crawl health. None of them tell you:

  • How often ChatGPT mentions your brand when asked a category question.
  • Which URLs Perplexity is citing for queries in your category.
  • Whether the AI Overview for your top buying queries names you, names a competitor, or says nothing at all.
  • How your brand is framed — recommended favorably, mentioned as an alternative, or described negatively.

Those are the questions buyers actually want answered in 2026. The audit gap is where GEO became its own discipline.

Where you actually win at GEO — the cross-engine pattern

Across all major AI engines, the single highest-leverage tactic is to be present and accurately described on the small set of third-party sources the engines disproportionately cite for your category. Those almost always include:

  • Wikipedia if your brand qualifies for an article (notability via independent press coverage).
  • The 1–3 dominant review aggregators in your category — G2 / Capterra for B2B SaaS, Trustpilot for consumer, Yelp / Google Business Profile for local.
  • The 2–3 dominant industry blogs and publications in your space.
  • Reddit in active subreddits where your category is discussed.
  • Your own site's most factual, well-structured pages — About, Pricing, Comparison, FAQ, all with clean Schema.org markup.

A proper GEO audit identifies exactly which of these sources matter most for your category. The optimization plan then becomes "get on those sources, framed favorably." That's the whole game.

What NOT to confuse for GEO

Three things you'll see sold as GEO that don't actually move the four metrics:

  • "Use more keywords." LLMs are not keyword matchers. Stuffing keywords does nothing.
  • "Submit your site to ChatGPT." There is no submission mechanism. Anyone offering one is misleading you.
  • "Buy LLM ads." The major engines don't run pay-for-citation programs in the way some agencies imply.

If a competitor agency is selling these, name them in your client conversations as common GEO myths — it positions your work as more credible.

The 90-day GEO playbook (in one paragraph)

The work breaks into three phases. Days 0–30 — quick wins: Schema.org markup buildout, FAQ pages targeting buyer queries, refreshing third-party listings (G2, Capterra, GBP, Trustpilot), seeding answers in active Reddit/Quora threads. Days 30–60 — foundation: a "Best [category] for [persona]" comparison hub, head-to-head comparison pages for each competitor, refreshing top organic content older than 12 months. Days 60–90 — authority: Wikipedia engagement (if eligible), tier-1 press, original research that gets cited, partnership content. Re-run the audit at day 90 and track the four metric movements.
